Which would be reason to seek hush money, the character damage besides. The reporting on the case lays out that he says the girl was using social media to attack his character, then claims she asked for $1000 to stay silent. While she says he demanded a NDA for $1000.
He might have mistakenly thought she was underage afterwards, but the indictments don't allege it.

I think it all reeks of someone who thought he was tiptoeing the line of what was legal by carefully making sure he didn't cross over, and then the prosecutors went and said lul, we're changing our interpretation of the law.

So per the DoJ's interpretation of 1591 in this charge, anyone who has a consensual relationship with a 17 year old in a state where the age of consent is 16, is guilty of federal child sex trafficking if they buy her a gift. Because anything of value being exchanged makes it a commercial sex act, and as long as someone is under age 18 the federal government can presuppose that it was a coerced relationship because minors cannot consent, even if states say they can, nullifying the need to establish threats or coercion.

So if I'm understanding it right, the federal sex trafficking charges here require exchange of sex for money, otherwise it would fall to state law where the age of consent is 16. And typically the statute being prosecuted 'normally' involves the use of coercion or force, ie for pimps

specifically it alleges:

"In approximately May of 2020, Plaintiff Minor Doe was 16 years of age. At about this time, Medina recruited Minor Doe to meet Lazzaro"
That particular filing has to do with the back-and-forth over the NDA and hush money. She claims it was coercion to silence her, he claims he was extorted and that she demanded money. Supposedly there are text messages that would make it more clear
