Managing people isn't fun. Longer hours aren't fun. Being the guy responsible when shit hits the fan isn't fun. And when you're promoted to management in the first place, it's normally because you're high(er)-functioning and it's the only way they know how not to lose you.
A lot of younger staff don't want the job. They want a new role that has the privileges without the responsibility.

Okay, I was sloppy when I phrased my previous post. You are right that lower middle management often times is still close to the employees and that their pay is usually adequate for the tremendous workload and pressure they have to endure. What I was referring to as being the lackey of shareholders is everyone from "upper middle management" up to the C-suite level.
