liberals have indeed moved more sharply to the left on almost every issue over the past 10-15 years than conservatives have moved to the right.
for example, if you talk about race and immigration like Obama did in 2008, you are now considered racist/xenophobic/politically incorrect/cancel-worthy by the left. the economic policies they support have also zoomed to the left. MMT/trillions of dollars in government spending/nationalized healthcare and all this stuff would have been non-starters as recently as 2012. (that their actual policies aren't nearly as left is due to of their shaky political majorities, rather than a lack of ambition.)

The internet just makes people further out in either direction 1,000x louder than everybody else.

That and the absolute media meltdown that started in 2016. That didn’t help de escalate anything, in fact had the opposite effect.
