But I mean, if contempt of court is a thing, shouldn't contempt of the police also be a thing? They are both authority figures that people should at least try not to defy too obviously.

Contempt of court does not mean "criticized the court". Contempt of court means you disobeyed a LEGAL court order.

It has always been and will always be legal to disobey illegal orders, and it is unambiguously protected speech to disrespect the police as long as you aren't threatening them or interfering with official business.

Well if you thought that I did, that was your very first mistake.

I do not value basic human rights for everyone - and instead think that certain people qualify to have their constitutional rights revoked. A perfect example would be sex offenders - they should be treated like the shit piles they are and eligible for whatever abuse society could throw at them, up to and including murder.

So you think anybody who offends a police officer should have their rights revoked? Because that's all these kids did.

Lets be clear that there is a pretty big difference between being temporarily detained by a cop and having the entirety of your basic human rights revoked.

I advocate for someone having to have proven themselves to be an absolute piece of human trash before I support the latter. As for being temporarily detained, I simply do not view this as having your rights violated - perceiving it that way is not different to me than being a Karen raging at a supermarket. Police officers are there to keep your community safe and deal with the very worst that society has to offer - you can't even imagine what a day in a life of a police officer is like. I trust their judgement better than any other person and would gladly take time out of my day to ease whatever suspicion they had about anything I was doing.

So you think police should be able to just randomly detain people for no reason.

Good to know.

That's one way of showing contempt for court. Another way is by being disrespectful to legal authorities in the courtroom (as per wikipedia).

Key word being "in the courtroom". The reason you can be charged in the court is to keep order in place to carry out the judicial procedure and it is limited to the court room for that reason.

You can disrespect anybody in the street.

But out on the street is where the police carry out their duties. So in a sense it is similar to a court house.

I took the time to explain in detail that suspicion needs to be reasonable and that if a police officer has detained you, they 99.9% of the time have a very good reason to think you're up to something you should not be doing.
