What do you mean by "a higher GDP wealth"?
In terms of GDP the U.S. is certainly higher by a factor of several thousand owing simply to technology, so I'm confused what you mean by this.
you're correct, its a moot comparison owing to the massive gap in technology. but if we control for inflation and for technology Rome is far more impressive.
we'd have to look at similar things for a valid comparison, the roman road system is far more impressive in both construction and upkeep than even the post-WW2 interstate highways of the US. They had better plumbing and waterway management than the modern US, etc. Again all controlling for inflation of technology.
i can 3d print a keychain today, 200 years ago a blacksmith may take a full day to make something similar. he's still far more impressive.

im not speaking in relative terms as you are, im speaking in current... its a fact that there is no comparison between the two by todays living standards
and as i stated from the onset that's an issue for 2 reasons.
1. to even say greatest of all time is silly, because it will always be a modern winner. invalidating 99% of history due to technology and inflation means u might as well say "greatest modern nation"
2. it itself will become moot as we are also eclipsed be it in 50 years or 200, due to how technology advances exponentially.
it's like someone asking "whats the greatest car of all time" then just googling "fastest car 2021". its a very reductionist view of conversation.
