No, that would be a strategic fail by the Democrats who decided to not field or endorse any replacement candidates with a (D) next to their name and instead put all their eggs in the basket of Newsom defeating the recall.
And it's not like an R governor could do much of anything against the Democratic supermajorities in the state legislature, so Elder or Faulconer or whoever would spend 1 year as a powerless figurehead before handing the office back to a Democrat.
And yes, that the Democratic candidate is struggling to get to 50% in a state as deeply and inelastically blue as present-day California is indeed an embarrassment for Newsom and the CADEMs.
