These numbers punish working families. As household income rises the benefits rapidly drop to zero while your expenses go up because daycare becomes a problem. If only one parent is working a low paying job while the other stays at home the benefits max out while your child care expenses are substantially lower. We have many situations where women drop their job to stay at home because they're better off financially.

While true, i just think working class people shouldn't have their child tax benefits taken away for making "too much". You need more help with daycare if both parents are working.

i agree child tax credits shouldn't go poof, but also last year i got an extra stimmy check for my daughter each round. im not hurting for cash but people who have child care expenses at least for that for each kid.

but still an 80k/year job is far easier than 5 kids at home, even if ur a shitty mom.

The thing that rattles me in Canada is our tax deduction rules around child care expenses. You can deduct up to $5,000-$7,000 per year on your taxes (age dependent) and up to $11,000 if they have a disability. But.... CRA forces the deduction on the lower income spouses tax return, where its often worth significantly less due to them being at a much lower tax rate.

I think CRAs logic is if you're not making as much as your partner you're not working as hard and therefore you had more time to take care of the kids anyway! Which is stupid.

Seems average child per household is 1.5 in Canada, not enough people taking advantage of this lucrative 5 child strategy.

indeed, my wife makes half or so what i make, as shes a public school teacher and works twice as hard. not only during the school year, but then in summer she's now 8-10 hours a day child care. i wouldnt swap with her for anything, chasing that little rugrat around all day is exhausting.

Teachers should earn more in a lot of places. Teaching and social work are professions where it is easy to get trapped in one of the 45k jobs there are an endless sea of. You HAVE to get a masters and you HAVE to be in a market that's worth a shit.
