I don’t disagree that trumps anti China stance was needed, one facet that I liked about him
I do feel strongly he did it in the wrong fashion and unfortunately method matters. He was simultaneously imposing tariffs on Mexico , France, germany AND China. He needed to get the western world on the same page and his fk all approach didn’t accomplish much, even if his heart was in the right place
I don’t think it matters who the leader is anymore. One of the best arguments I heard was utilizing India and stoking that rivalry, however India will ally in a second with China if it means pak destruction. If pak and India formed some sort of alliance that would be huge and promising but I don’t think that’s realistic. As a brown myself who has followed indopak politics for awhile, I wouldn’t count on India or pak to get the job done to deal with the China dilemma
I think the hardening of public opinion on China was always coming, but that Trump accelerated this "awakening" by some crucial years. I also think that he did the right thing when he prevented the sale of Qualcomm to a Chinese buyer on national security grounds and so on. His efforts on the alliance forging front were subpar and his tariffs were far too short-sighted and half-assed.
Regarding India: China is increasingly ramping up its military aggression against India, violating their borders, threatening to cut off their water supply, etc. I dont think that the rivalry between India and China needs to be stoked all that much by the West, it's gonna increase automatically over the coming decades. The water issue also applies to Pakistan.
To elaborate on this point a bit: half the world population depends on water from rivers whose source lies on the Tibetian plateau. That's the deeper reason why the Chinese, for decades, tried to seize as much of this region as they could, why they invested absurd sums to build modern roads and rails to Tibet, why they tried to settle as many Han Chinese in Tibet as they could. As long as the Chinese control the sources of the Indus, Ganges, Bhramaputra, Irrawaddy and Mekong rivers - and are able to defend them militarily - they have huge leverage over their South and Sout East Asian neighbors.
