Unfortunately not possible for everyone but if you can make yourself indisposable at your job you will naturally create leverage and if you have the stomach to act on that leverage it may result in higher wages.

I know everytime we lost an employee I'd just take more responsibility and I'd demand higher wages or I'd walk.

It has to be meaningful responsibility, don't just take on more of what you're currently doing and be someone's bitch. Chase after what the next rung on the ladder is doing.

That was my initial strategy, worked well for me, won't for everyone obviously.

Edit: The above did result in many many months of 340 hours +, you do give up much of your personal free time.
