I know everytime we lost an employee I'd just take more responsibility and I'd demand higher wages or I'd walk.
It has to be meaningful responsibility, don't just take on more of what you're currently doing and be someone's bitch. Chase after what the next rung on the ladder is doing.
That was my initial strategy, worked well for me, won't for everyone obviously.
Edit: The above did result in many many months of 340 hours +, you do give up much of your personal free time.
