Would be accepted from an old fart as colleague, I've actually let it slide not too long ago. Old fart referenced the Turkish roots of a colleague towards him being a terrorist (muslim bla bla). It was done in somewhat of a bad joke, him being clumsy with words and them going way back made it easy to dust it off.
What ticks me, is that on the issue I'm comparing my old fart, clumsy, anti-social colleague to the best the US has to offer to lead the most powerful country in the world. One of these 2 are working at a place they should work. The other is not meant to lead a society with these inabilities.
the only issue i see with your point is that we haven't had a "popular presidency" in decades. Clinton did ok until the whole impeachment blowup. Bush 1 did ok. Bush 2 was a disaster, Obama was not popular with many, Trump isn't either.
we don't live in a country where the president "leads". they're just a guy who's in charge of 1/3 of the govt, and that 1/3 has gotten less and less done every single president for decades. the office itself is so ineffectual that having a celebrity run it is almost justice. his largest fault has been the continued expansion of EO's, he should have just sat on his hands, as should have Obama.
