I dont think you get it. You can be charged with a crime like murder and be held in jail before being convicted. 100% of the citizens in prison have been convicted.

I don't think you get this but if you're in jail and you're not poor you can do things like bond yourself out and not be incarcerated.

Another thing you might not quite understand is the people who are in prison are there due to plea bargaining and less than 10% of cases go to jury trial. When they take a plea bargain they agree to go to jail for a crime that both sides agree never even occurred. This is totally done with no consideration of innocence or guilt, just what is likely to happen.

Population density matters too. They published a study in Nature, back in the late 70's early 80's. They put mice in the same pop. density as the people in NYC.
The mice started killing each other, stealing food, raping , etc.

The US has densities approaching that of Indonesia as well... but generally in large cities. I just made the population point and the point that we had to count ALL murders, not just guns, when making comparisons.

I just didn't want to see UK US comparisons with incorrect assumptions... again.

I like the idea of release/hold based on crime charged and getting rid of bail. I have an issue with the way you try to make it sound like people are being arrested on a whim all the time.

You plea to a lesser crime offered to you for not making them go to trial. Its your own fault if you're confessing to a crime you didn't commit.
