a pipe bomb could be just a hand grenade but homemade. likely with a cannon/flintlock wick, which u can buy at any sporting good's store.

he likely never felt the time was right to light and toss one, and in any small space it would be suicide for him, such as a hallway.

they can be rigged to explode ahead of time tho, just ask Ted Kaczynski.
