No, they don't have a point. The only criteria for being an atheist is rejection of supernatural beings. Atheism doesn't require any sort of intelligence.
Christians are Hindu atheists. They reject the Hindi gods. Atheists are just one step further where we reject both the Christian and Hindi gods.
Atheism, by itself, is not a sign of intelligence or free-thinking. Nor should it ever be anything more than the definition I gave.
