Our country probably wouldn't exist without him, so criticism of him might just be armchair philosophy.
Our country would exist. It just wouldn't be a single nation. It'd be two. And, especially with the foreign invasion being inflicted upon the south/southwest by the north, and the attempt to actively prevent the south/southwest to put a stop to it, it could easily be argued that the interests of the people of the States would be better served had the Union lost.
The #1 issue with Lincoln was the destruction of State Sovereignty. The 10th Amendment is very clear: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” This has been violated to such an extreme, and power and wealth stolen and centralized in DC to such a massive extent that another Civil War seems more likely than not. Just a question of when.
