I mean, this is how it was going before this coup;

We regarded it as the most stable in the region, which is a tallest midget award.

also please make note with extreme, dripping, caustic irony our criticisms like;

Bazoum, a former interior minister and candidate from Issofou’s Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism, was elected president in the February 2021 election. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the “peaceful transfer of power”, despite widespread accusations of fraud by the opposition.

“The West looked the other way as authorities leveraged the law to constrain the ambitions of Hama Amadou [Issoufou’s rival has been imprisoned and barred from running as an opposition candidate in the last election],” Thurston told Al Jazeera. “Western governments also did not scrutinize the 2016 and 2020/2021 elections, both of which had irregularities.”

This article reads like whistling in the dark. "We lost Mali, but neighboring Niger can become our stronghold".

Too much skepticism. I think people underestimate where Africa will be in 50-100 years.

Oh, Africa is a huge continent and some parts will show tremendous development over the next 50-100 years. There's lots of potential, just not in Mali/Niger/Chad.

In a statement issued on Friday, Russia's foreign ministry warned other West African nations not to send troops into Niger.
It said: "We believe that a military solution to the crisis in Niger could lead to a protracted confrontation in that African country, and to a sharp destabilisation of the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region as a whole."
...
Coup supporters, some waving Russian flags, protested at a French military base near the capital.

Niger population up for joining the club of Russia, North Korea, Syria and Iran?

Colonialism was undoubtedly a scourge for many africans. With that said Niger got its independence in 1960.
If it thinks that French influence is the main or only reason why Niger is still a backwater shithole 60 years later.
Then good luck to them becoming a vassal of China and its following of oppressive dictatorships.

If you were Nigerien with your own interests in mind, would China seem so bad?
China and the US both wish to exploit African resources in the long term by promising short term development. The US is a fading power that wishes to micromanage its puppet states and force its values upon them and forces nonstop proxy wars and violent revolutions that get millions of people killed. China seeks to expand its economic stranglehold but generally doesn't give a shit about how the locals live their lives, favoring peace and stability and seeking to pacify the countries and prevent conflicts so their winning strategy can't be upset. I can't pretend to know what Russia really aspires to in Africa since it has a fraction of the influence and only in the least valuable regions, more or less just spitefully holding back US influence.

I think its a no-brainer. When has western imperialism ever worked out for brown countries, or even poor white countries?

Fuck around and find out. French military buffered regions from Boko Haram and other extremist Muslim groups.
Perhaps Wagner and Chinese paramilitaries will do the same?
Or as you just said, perhaps they won't give a shit and more extremist Muslim whackjobs will move into the vacuum left by western forces.

Still think that scenario is a win win?

Let's also keep in context that the importance of Niger or Mali to France or the US is limited.
The main power in west Africa is Nigeria and they are far more aligned with the US and even the UK and will continue to be so.

In the USA: "The legacy of slavery which ended over 150 years ago is still responsible for the poor outcomes of blacks!"

With respect to Niger: "Colonialism was 60 years ago, that's forever, it has nothing to do with their poor outcomes!"

Which one is it?

you're reading incorrectly. they're saying colonialism from the French DID cause the state they're in, BUT being a vassal state to China won't bring them out of it. because its colonialism in all but name.
