Proving in-person learning is not essential.

Which I agree with and wish we had more of.

My son is an exception to this. He thrives in the classroom, and falls way behind from home.

So we should eliminate home schooling?

no, but i think its a terrible idea if you only have one child and you dont know what you are doing

and most people have no idea what they are doing

needless to say that public schools in the west are a fucking disaster right now

this is not an exception, its the norm imo

I have to reiterate this. Studies are very clear that in-person learning is essential for children who are slow learners, who come from low-education families or who speak a foreign first language. It's also more important for younger children than for older ones. You can expect a 17-year old to be able to learn on his own, but not an 8-year old.

Remote learning doesn't make a lot of a difference for older children from educated, privileged households, but it's devastating for poor and/or migrant kids. And of course it does make a difference if the parents are knowledge-workers who can work from home and tend to their children during remote learning or if they have to leave home to be physically present at their job. Obviously, the loudest proponents of lockdowns and school closures happen to be journalists, academics, bureaucrats and so on who all belong to the first group...

and teachers themselves who got comfortable chilling at home, throwing some material at the schoolkids real quick, while taking care of their own (if they have any)

university folks have also become nice and comfy at home

you make good points, i would still add the social component here

until a certain age its important to be around other kids regularly, there is a reason why mental illness has skyrocketed among kids

Pretty sure most studies validate in class learning. In addition to poorer grades on average there is less observation by mandatory reporters so unreported child abuse goes up and children in those situations or from places where food scarcity like some places in rural America it cuts off access to important nutrition programs. I'm pretty sure studies are showing self-harm and suicidality increasing with the loss of socialization and access to a peer group. I'm skeptical about it for the many reasons I am skeptical to home schooling providing a quality education compared to direct access to professionals tending to you.

As for university, I'm a field instructor for a couple schools and I actually have to express that all the hours will have to be on-site.

Are you really a field instructor? Hope you ain't teaching people to hate the white people like you do online. Do they know you act like that online? Do they know the kind of conversations you hold online or that's your online persona?

We already know which city he's from and the years he's born. I wonder if he'd hold the same statements if people where he teach at knew his position online unless there is a dozen field instructors that are born the same year and month that are also field instructor at multiple schools!
