I've been back and forth with Bill since the Bush years but in the era of Trump he's become a more reasonable voice

I unabashedly go hard on issues like these but I believe he is right. It should not be a he is guilty or she is lying scenario it should be a let's get to the truth (in public) investigation

I can understand the passion and frustration from the 2 female pundits that jumped his ass but agree with Bill

due to the timing of the midterms, the republicans either have to push through Kavanaugh this week or the next, or they have to dump him and push through the next nominee immediately - otherwise, they risk not getting their candidate confirmed before the newly elected senators are sworn in, and thus, to not get a conservative confirmed at all if they lose the senate. the odds of Dems taking the senate still seem very long, but it's not impossible if the blue wave really materializes.

with this in mind, calling for a thorough investigation is equivalent to calling for dismissing Kav.

Its really just a show of putting them both up there and listening to them. Unless Kavanaugh blunders badly thats all there is to do. Theres no way to prove guilt unless he admits to it at this point 35 years later.

THIS. It's a balm for the ego hearing. Ford knows that if she pushes on this, she will lose everything, no matter what happens to Kavanaugh. Ford probably also realizes that listening to the Democrratic party about this, was probably not the best idea.

its not about proving guilt, its about cheap political gain. either the republicans delay the hearings or drop Kav to nominate someone else - in that case, the democrats have gained a slight sliver of hope of winning the senate and stopping the nomination of a 2nd trump-appointed SCOTUS judge.
or they force headlines about "republicans voting a guy to the supreme court despite sexual assault allegations", which has the potential to be politically toxic right at the climax of the midterms race.

and in any case, they have prevented the bad optics of many red-state democratic senators voting for Kavanaugh - this option is almost surely off the table, he'll have at least 49 votes against him now.
