It's a quote from Martin Luther from the 1500s before Decartes, Newton, and Galileo. He was basically saying humans can't rely on reasoning because our ability to reason lead to the downfall of the Roman Empire and barbarianism in the Middle Ages.

Why the fuck that church took his quote out of context and tried to apply it to a modern audience, however, is completely baffling...

i'm not very knowledgeable on the history of the roman empire, mind explaining this?

In my opinion, reason is overrated compared to understanding, or faith. They're both dead ends but I find one more interesting.

A good analogy is Dungeons and Dragons. Reason is the powergamer who rolls the dice and does the math and slays the monster. Faith is the roleplayer who accepts the fantasy world and plays along to the story.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot: Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive. A good mix is in order to remain competitive while enjoying the form of life.

&I'll tell you this: Reason is the root of man's plight, not faith. It's reason which seeks advantage; faith's role is to accept.

what do think it means to understand something?

i mean you can claim to understand something when you don't (goddidit) or you can understand something because you understand how it actually works

I'm not trying to debate and I am aware I used the word understanding loosely, but what I meant to illustrate is that understanding is rooted in acceptance. Reason, or knowledge, is creative, while understanding is accepting.

Hey atheists. What is a good argument to act morally? What is a good argument to follow your moral conscience?

you act on it based on experience, and how it affects others
you dont need god to know not to kill or steal because you probably wouldnt like it if that happened to you

its just as simple as that but im sure they will try to find a way to warp it into something complicated and contradicting

Fair enough. Again I think you would like his book "A Universe from nothing", you would most likely find it a good read. From his book he mentions how people tend to believe Einstein came up with relativity in isolation but that's just not the case. He followed experiments, observations and after learning new mathematics and following false theoretical leads he was finally able to produce relativity. He was competing with David Hilbert at the time.

"God does not play dice with the universe." - Einstein

"In the absence of any other proof, the thumb alone would convince me of God's existence." - Isaac Newton

"Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." - James 2:19

Consciousness is a feature of the world. Hedonic tone is a feature of certain conscious systems. Positive hedonic tone has intrinsic value within a conscious system and negative hedonic tone has intrinsic anti-value within a conscious system. Any one conscious system does not have any more ontological reality than any other conscious system. Therefore, objective moral values exist.
