Unfortunately that ship's probably sailed already.

Our emissions have gone down substantially over the past 20 years. I think we're going to be much better off having done that compared to doing nothing. We've still got a long way to go but I think we've probably avoided some of the severity.

let’s not bring science, math, and logic into it. goes against the emotional narrative

Global emissions haven't decreased, unfortunately.

If we aren't recapturing carbon then we aren't avoiding any consequences, just delaying them slightly.

This is true but the rate is decreasing which is good. Buying time so we can adapt, further improve technology, etc. is of utmost importance.

The concerning thing is consequences of CO2 emissions have been consistently under-estimated by the scientific community. Right now the consensus is we're right on the edge of catastrophe, and if the previous trend holds, we are probably already well off the edge.

If we can't start extreme carbon capture very soon we're screwed.

you said here you drive around in a car to make money. you dont need that money, other people need it more, and it causes excess carbon emissions. knock it off

WTF LOL?!?! What makes you think that solar and wind peak in synch with peak loads? Energy demand peaks on cold, dark winter mornings and evenings, solar peaks on hot, sunny summer days. Wind is completely unreliable and doesn't synch up at all with either the daily or seasonal variation in demand.

He's a cult member. Talking to him is worthless.

That is in $/mwh. We've been over this. Several times. Over several years.

Do you not remember? This is where the meme "Endless can't even do percentage equations" came from. Because you said even if we took the efficiency of solar panels from 15 to 30% it wouldn't be much, and I pointed out that's double efficiency and would make solar panels the premier source of power.

That isn't a number.

My friend has permanent brain damage and has trouble retaining knowledge in academic settings. Working with his hands comes much easier to him and learning hands on is much easier to him.

Yikes, sorry to hear that. Making the best of his life in such a situation is admirable!

I have to ask, do you not believe in climate change? I don't consider myself an alarmist, but it seems prudent to make investments now so we don't have to deal with harsher consequences in the future. I take the same approach with China and many other long term threats.

Of course I do believe in climate change. What I do not believe in is the extreme alarmism. Anyone remember these old predictions which turned out to be waaay overblown?

So yeah, I do consider climate change to be a very serious problem, but I don't think it is this ultra-urgent issue on which we only have 5 more years left to avert the collapse of civilization or anything like that.

Equally as important, I disagree with a lot of the liberal approaches for tackling climate change. Simply put, I consider 'sacrifice and top-down restrictions' to be neither an acceptable nor a realistic solution for the problem. My humble opinion: either mankind finds technological solutions which allow us to maintain our standard of living or we're fucked.

So while I support strong investment into research on climate mitigation or carbon capture technologies and support doing everything that's economically sensible and good for the climate (e.g. replacing coal with cheaper solar as long as base load can be maintained), I am strongly against these liberal or leftist attempts at exploiting climate change as a door opener for the "transformation of society and the economy" that they have always dreamt about. Lots of political watermelons floating around in this regard (green outside, red inside).

So what about Biden's policy is so bad? He wants to slowly transform the grid to use cleaner energy and wants to have electric vehicles on the road. Is this unacceptable to you?
