But some of the world's greatest minds are atheists. Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, to name a few. The Greeks and Romans had very advanced cultures for their time, and they were not religious (aside from their pantheons of gods, which were more mythology than true religion). In fact, the spread of Christianity in Europe coincided with the Dark Ages and it was the most intellectually stunted period in the history of Europe.
I know that you are Christian and I am not gonna be one of those rude people who say to the face of a Christian that his religion is fake, but I really think you are a bit biased when you say that atheism represses hope, creativity...etc. There are plenty of atheist societies that are thriving.
The Romans were extremely religious. They were well known for reciting very in-depth prayers before battle, calling upon favour from the Pantheon. Their entire lives revolved around their religion, which included human sacrifice (sparingly) along with other less sacrifices such as the burning of incense. Their devotion to their religion exceeds even that of the most fanatical Christian sects.
There are some smart atheists, but Dawkins and Hawking for example are complete intellectual lightweights compared to the titans who forged the groundwork of natural science. They are not even close to being among the world's greatest minds, in fact they are not even 95th percentile. Isaac Newton, Lord Rayleigh, etc. etc. etc. all these people were very religious.
I'm not biased at all, atheism by definition is the lack of faith, lack of hope, the repression of the human spirit. Recent historical evidence very clearly supports this.
