The Israelites leading up to Christs birth believed that the Messiah would bring great peace and prosperity immediately upon arrival. Jesus' disciples also may have once believed this, but through Jesus' teachings he made it clear that His arrival would bring great division on Earth. (i.e. the many denominations of Christianity, the many wars since his era)
"I came not to send peace, but a sword. This is not a sword of judgment, of military action, or of personal violence. The item Jesus refers to here is the Greek term machairan, most often used for large knives such as those used by fisherman. The main purpose of those blades was to separate different parts of a cut of meat, this is the same term used in the book of Hebrews to depict Scripture's ability to separate truth and error - Hebrews 4:12
The sword will naturally divide those who believe and those who do not, as well as those who mix the truth with their own twisted lies. This was reiterated time and time again throughout the gospels.
very astute discernment the likes of I have not seen in a while. Good interpretation. You could also call it a willingness to fight back if necessary vs the OG intent to be sacrificial.
THough i disagree w/ biblical moral theology in general for many reasons.
