gauging what happened in many industries like meat packing if the govt never shut down the businesses generally many more companies would have been forced to close due to outbreaks. just imagine the larger infected number with current hysteria if bars, restaurants, large retailers, etc were still open. and if places like Macys were open now they'd be operating at a loss daily, with no govt bonds to offset the losses. if they're allowed to be open and not making money its their fault with less (or possible no) taxpayer bailouts.

we're seeing far lower mortality rates than we thought, but the hysteria is still disproportionately high. outbreaks in private firms would still require closures due to this hysteria.

This.

People were already staying at home before formal shelter-in-place orders were issued. The bad news in this is that the economy wont be able to get back to a decent level until the public health side of things is, or at least seems, under control again.

Of course not. There will be a vaccine eventually; and I assume that there will also be effective treatment that reduces hospital time and increases survival chances of those who need to be hospitalized. Such a treatment would increase the level of infections that the healthcare system can handle without being overrun.

Furthermore, there might well be cross-immunities so that subsequent waves dont hit a population with zero immunity again. Right now, to stop this virus from getting out of hand, we need to stop 60-70% of infections. If there is 40% immunity among the population against the 2023 coronavirus strain based on cross-immunities, then we only need to stop 20% of infections, which is easily possible without shutdowns.

Let's hope people are better at getting covid shots than flu shots and other vaccines.

I know I have friends who were C average people in high school but all the sudden they know better than that CDC and they aint being Guinea pigs.

So far we have gotten nowhere with treatments.

Have not had a flu shot ever, have not had the flu in over 10 years aside from the professional type.

Millennial Flu is a thing the older doctors i work with say about their younger colleagues lol.

I've had the flu three times in my life, all three times no flu shot. I've never gotten it with a flu shot.

I've been vaccinated for anthrax :p

As far as I understand it, developing new treatments or vaccines for a completely unknown new disease takes its time, a couple of months at a minimum.

Btw, just today, there were some reports about progress on this front:
https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/05/12/world/12reuters-health-coronavirus-who.html

Regarding a coronavirus vaccine: I personally will wait for a couple of months once it comes out. Considering the public and economic pressure, this vaccine is guaranteed to have been rushed, with the bare minimum of testing for long-term side effects etc. Since I'm not in a risk group (and most likely already had it anyway, meaning I should be immune for at least some time), I would definitely let others go ahead and play the guinea pig.
