Maybe this is a function of my own implicit biases. As a foreigner, my percpetion will almost automatically get shaped disproportionately by channels like CNN (only US channel airing on free tv in Germany afaik), by high-quality newspapers of record like the NY Times or the WaPo, and by similarly elite publications like The Atlantic or NY magazine.
All in all, I still think that national media does on aggregate have a distinct liberal slant. But you and thor are probably right that I'm vastly underestimating how big and influential local news and talk radio are since these are types of media I engage with significantly less than someone actually living in the States.
they're right.
even on a simplistic view in 2020 overall CNN+MSNBC = 1.09 x the total viewers of Fox News. so 2 networks with a clear liberal bias are almost exactly the same as the 1 with a clear conservative bias.
and many conservatives are into talk radio, liberals more into online news sources, etc.
overall it's very balanced, and an age old false narrative rooted in the fact that fox is the lone GOP network, even though it equals the others more or less in viewers. its a ufc fighter beating up a class of toddlers, while vilifying the toddlers.

You, too, sponge up (left wing) talking points far more than you want to admit. Just sayin'...
"Let him who is without bias cast the first stone"
i can throw a rock pretty hard.
