I mean, it's a legitimate concern. There's cases of classics that went mostly undiscovered until a lucky event. The Great Gatsby probably would have languished in obscurity if it wasn't shipped to soldiers in WW2.
This is just another issue with capitalism and it not being in our best interests. Good and interesting new ideas aren't profitable enough to risk shelf space when you have guaranteed sellers, even if those new ideas would have been seen as unassailable classics in 100 years.
Most readers just want to be entertained by fiction they enjoy, their goal is not to find the highest-quality books possible.
And for those who want to look beyond the commercial mainstream and not miss any gems, there are book critics, rankings, recommended reads and so on.
The truth simply is that a high literarily quality and mainstream appeal are not the same thing. Whether we're talking about books, comics, TV or music, most people are perfectly happy consuming mediocre, vapid material.
