Don't tell bogie because he will insist its not real with the same fervor he used to say America never interfered with Iran's government.
Talk about being inside someone's head. You might want to start a fan club.
The United States has played a pivotal in Iranian history post-WWII, but this...
Quote (Thor)
The real cause of Islam's slide backwards was the systemic pushing of radical groups to fight our enemies in the middle east. As an example, the United States directly funded the Taliban and provided them with radical islamic literature during the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
...is profoundly incorrect. Shia fundamentalism has its roots as far back as the 19th century as a major political force. Mosaddegh came to power with the support of the Islamic hardliners, whom he promptly disappointed by supporting a secular Iran. His support among the clerics eroded , and was a major contributing factor in the collapse of his government. He perhaps could have withstood the anger of Great Britain and the subsequent CIA-funded coup, but he simultaneously angered both the Shah, whom he wished to consign to irrelevance, and the fundamentalist clerics, whom commanded immense support among rural Iran.
Nor is the United States even the main villain of this story. The United States was loathe to support Britain's financial interests, openly pressured the British to compromise, and only initiated a coup after they became concerned about the prospect of a communist takeover in Iran. Given how the Saur revolution in Afghanistan later played out, it wasn't an unreasonable concern.
