The best summary of the substance of last night's debate is probably this article:
https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/09/presidential-debate-joe-biden-hides-agenda-from-american-people

Quote
[Biden's] greatest crime was that he spent the evening hiding his agenda from the American people.

Quote
it was galling of a major party nominee to say aloud that he was “not going to answer” whether he would support an effort to pack the court as president. And while that comment may have been the most explicit dodge, it typified his overall performance, which was much less substantive than Trump’s.

Quote
Biden proceeded to hit Trump for both the lockdowns and the death toll, saying that “this is his economy he shut down” and asking “how many of you got up this morning and had an empty chair at the kitchen table because someone died of COVID?” Considering Biden’s lack of policy fixes and his affinity for shutdowns, it was an unconvincing bit.

Quote
Biden also asserted that the Green New Deal would pay for itself while insisting that he doesn’t support it and that he has his own “Biden Plan.” This mess is further complicated by his own website — where the third paragraph of the “The Biden Plan for a Clean Energy Revolution and Environmental Justice” begins, “Biden believes the Green New Deal is a crucial framework for meeting the climate challenges we face.”

Quote
With Election Day rapidly approaching, Americans deserve honest answers from Biden about his views on such matters as the Green New Deal and packing the Supreme Court.

No, of course not?!
All the points I cited from this article are excellent and important. There are indeed huge question marks surrounding Biden's actual agenda, and on Tuesday, he largely weaseled out of answering them.

Trump of course also had his weak moments on policy, he was also bullshitting a lot and failed to make a cogent case for why he should be president for another 4 years...

Good strategy from Biden.

Trump is not strong on policy at all, so he doesn't have to make more of a showing on policy than the bare minimum and then let Trump stick his foot in his mouth.

Of course it's a good strategy. Still risky.

Also... the lead of Democrats in several key senate races, like Kelly in AZ or Cunningham in NC, is based on crossover voters. If these voters have to fear that Democrats will go nuclear and pack the courts (and potentially the Senate itself) if they get a trifecta, they might split their ticket and vote Biden+McSally/Thillis instead, just to be sure. What Biden says about how far he's willing to go can have huge repercussions on downballot races. He owes the American voters a clear answer on these issues.

In other words, you can't argue them to be in your favor so you'll just pretend like they are anyway without explaining how they could be. Cool dodge, bro.
