Trump got graded on a huge curve and Hillary got graded in the opposite direction for being a woman. Sure you can point to some things that she was attacked for "because she's Hillary" but she also got attacked for certain things for being a woman. Even my wife said she didn't want to vote for "someone that bitchy".
Perhaps Hillary is just a fundamentally unlikable person, irrespective of her gender?

I also personally heard plenty of people say they couldn't vote for someone who stayed with their man after what he did, and in an election where 70,000 votes in like 4 states was the margin that's a big deal.
Sure you can say "they were ready to elect a woman just not Hillary", but any woman gets attacked for shit that men don't get attacked for (look at all the ugly face memes of Michelle Obama and AOC, you just don't see those of males).
Staying with a man who had betrayed and humiliated her on the national stage was seen as weakness, as beta behavior. A male candidate who had been publicly cheated on and humiliated by his wife and stuck with her, he would be considered just as much of a loser and beta.
When it comes to ugly face memes - it's deeply ingrained in human nature that women are judged by their looks to a larger degree than men - just like men are rated more strongly based on their success or leadership qualities than on their looks.
Not sure if I would consider this pattern to be sexism. But yes, in high profile political races, this is probably a structural disadvantage for female candidates.
