Speaking of holding people hostage: has anyone noticed how Netanyahu had basically offered Hamas a ceasefire if they release the hostages (yesterday, in his response to Biden who was going off script and demanding a "pause")?
Strange how none of the "humanitarian ceasefire now"- or "stop the genocide"-crowd seem to have picked that up to demand a release of the hostages.
I'm not sure how many of that crowd have ever treated Hamas or Palestinians in general as if they have any agency or decision making capability. At best they're commented on like the weather, a natural phenomenon.
I mean, just look at the incredibly awkward BBC phrasing:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-67321463>Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt fails to open for foreigners
>Hundreds of people with foreign passports went to the border, but the gate did not open.
>Sources from the crossing authorities on the Palestinian side told the BBC that movement of people with foreign passports is not being allowed until there is agreement on the safety of transferring injured patients.
Its not that Hamas
decided to stop foreigners from leaving, its that the 'gates failed to open'. Do they need a shipment of WD40? Should I call Felix, my handyman? Or has the gate attained sentience and must be bargained with for passage, will it accept a ceremonial token of earth and water?
For fucks sake, they can't even write a basic bitch article about Hamas making an ultimatum with a premise, without treating them as if they have zero agency. Hamas
decided to block people from leaving. Their stated reason is a dispute over the status of injured patients, which follows Israel calling out Hamas for transferring wounded fighters through these civilian channels. Hamas doesn't want their ambulances searched and fighters detained, so they're blocking everyone else from leaving. That's an actor with agency and culpability. But no, the BBC writes about
the gate
