Just watched it. Essentially, he's going through a list of groups to pander to and checks them off.
And it's quite funny how Obama's big endorsement-of-Biden video contains more praise for himself and Bernie than for Biden. I also like the second half of the video, where Obama gets into a good groove and keeps making a compelling case for his view of the political situation in America, the world, and for the stakes of the upcoming election. Then, a few seconds before the end, he remembers that this video is about Biden and not about him liking to hear himself talk.
I dont blame Obama though, the whole premise was always tough to sell: "When I was on the ballot, Joe didnt stand a chance in the primaries; and then he served as a great sidekick to me - but NOW, he's a super strong candidate, he's the real deal, the best choice. Vote Joe!".
Two specific points:
- the part where Obama says "together, Joe and I handled the H1N1 and the Ebola outbreak and prevented it from becoming a huge pandemic like what we're dealing with now" is just so sneaky and disingenous. he's trying to draw a contrast between how him and Biden handled pandemic threats and how Trump is handling the coronavirus. Well, guess what, these outbreaks Obama/Biden were dealing with, they were quelled all around the world, it's no specific achievement by them. Similarly, all the other governments around the world also failed to contain the coronavirus, Trump is not to blame for the fact that this virus made it to the US. (Yes, Trump is responsible for the way the outbreak is handled, but that's not the subtext Obama is sending here. The subtext is "we contained the viruses of our time while Trump failed to contain his".)
- at the 10:00 minute mark, he delivers a great line and argument: "This crisis has reminded us that government matters, that
good government matters". Trump neither providing nor even caring about good government imho is one of the most compelling and least divise cases the Democrats can make against him. This is the kind of argument that persuades college-educated suburban swing voters.
