It wouldnt surprise me if some liberal stronghold ( *cough* California *cough* ) were trying to take this as an excuse for shutting down meat plants. They've wanted to reeducate people into being vegans for a long time, because its healthier, better for the climate, muh animal rights, creates skinnier and wimpier people thus reducing toxic masculinity, etc. pp.




That's almost exactly what we've been doing here. Since the EU's eastern expansion, most jobs in farming and slaughterhouses in Western Europe have been filled with cheap Eastern European laborers, Poles, Romanians, Bulgarians. In the region where most of Germany's slaughterhouses are located, you have Bulgarian laborers working in these plants illegally, for about one fifth of the national minimum wage, living in the nearby woods in shacks or sometimes holes in the ground that they have dug themselves. And no, I'm not kidding, I'm dead serious.

Anyway, when most borders in Europe were closed due to Covid-19, our farmers quickly realized that they would be fucked without having access to a couple hundred thousand filthy cheap farm hands that they need starting in late spring. For about a week or two, there were discussions about sending the millions of newly unemployed to the fields, or students who have nothing to do atm, or refugees, and so on. They quickly realized that all those proposals would be neither constitutional nor practical. So they made exceptions for seasonal farm workers who are now allowed to enter the country again.

They implemented some lip service hygiene rules, like for example that the farmers employing them have to make sure that they self-quarantine for 2 weeks after arriving in Germany. Which is absurd since these seasonal farm hands live in crowded 20-people bedrooms and such. A couple ten thousand of them have already been flown in. Essentially, these token hygiene rules mean that the government was indirectly saying "we cant go without this kind of cheap labor, fuck it, yolo". I guess if some of them contract the virus and die or cant keep working, there's plenty more where they are coming from?!

Isnt globalized, neoliberal capitalism great?

Only fools would believe everything the WHO is saying while ignoring the contrary warnings from the actual experts, i.e. virologists around the world.

leading by example. no wonder the cult is embracing their science denial with 'role models' like trump and pence...

I mean, the disembodied head is just flat out lying. He's referencing reports from when China only had a few dozen confirmed cases, whereas the WHO was warning the world that the virus would spread worldwide by the first of February.

Black said in January (and Feb), and WHO said it couldn’t be spread from person to person in the middle of January (1/14/2020). then 2.5 weeks later said the completely exact opposite

earlier in april the WHO said masks dont work and not to wear them

The WHO in January happily disseminated Chinese propaganda ("study finds no proof for human-to-human transmission") while virologists and epidemiologists around the world were already sounding the alarm.



Just one week later, the Chinese government locked down Wuhan and all of Hubei province and started welding people into their homes. Even in February, government figures and institutes in countries like Germany, the UK, most of the rest of Europe, Australia, Mexico, Russia, and so on were downplaying the threat, insisting that their respective countries are well-prepared, and have everything under control anyway.


Which brings me back to what I was saying in my initial post:


And like I already acknowledged, Trump took too long to take the necessary steps once the true extent of the threat finally became undeniable; and he has harmed a lot of the response measures through sheer incompetence.
Still, the accusation "why didnt you listen to the warnings in your intelligence briefings in January and February" is kinda moot when almost everyone else also didnt.

Saying we don't yet have evidence of human to human transmission isn't surprising when it's a brand new virus. At the time they only had 41 cases and they were all localized to one area. Not having clear evidence of human-to-human transmission isn't just accurate for the time, it's expected for that situation. However, as the numbers grow and you start identifying it outside of that localized area, it becomes very clear that there is human to human transmission. A week of exponential growth is a fuck ton of growth after all.

One week later it was likely clear there was human to human transmissions because that's how exponential growth works. Things become very clear very quickly as the numbers increase.

hardly surprising imo. it's probably underreported in basically every country, but it might be particularly significant in the US due to lack of early testing, broken healthcare system that kept people with problems away from doctors / hospitals, and the politicisation of the issue.
