There is nothing wrong with Uber.
It is not meant to pay a salaried wage, it's part-time work that is providing value (e.g. ubereats) where it didn't exist before. If Uber were to raise their rates I wouldn't spend a dime.
The notion that we shouldn't order food unless we're paying exorbitant rates, or that people shouldn't have the ability to supplement their income on a free Friday night, is asinine. The notion that we should pay a taxi monopoly a certain percentage of our income for a quick ride home is nonsense.
Good thing nobody is making those claims.
The claim was specifically that uber is "a way up", when in fact it's not some key to greater things. It's largely side work or sustenance wages. Uber is great as a way to make extra money, and the "gig economy" would be great if it was a supplement and not replacing traditional employment.
The innovations that are typically made by these gig economy companies are not actual "innovations", but more ways to skirt paying employees decent wages to maintain a competitive edge against companies that maintain regular employment and benefit models.
It's a double-edged sword, because on one hand the gig economy is great for people like me, who like having easy and low-commitment ways to make money in off times (I'm actually doing captioning right now towards that exact end) but that's largely at the expense of a full-time job with benefits.
