On the one hand, you had a handful of extremely religious evangelical parents in economically marginal communities trying and failing to keep Harry Potter out of their local school library.
On the other hand, you have a vast, self-reinforcing attempt to establish group-think using corporations, universities, and other organizations with significant social and institutional power. Forget taking an offensive book out of the school library and moving it to the adults section, publishers should prevent the book from being published at all. If a university professor is critical, fire them. Don't like what you see on cable news? The cable companies should cancel it.
Suffice to say that they aren't very similar at all, either in breadth, scope, or tactics. What we're seeing today is toxic, whether it's right-wing or left-wing. Now that the tactics are out there, you can be sure the right will learn to use it in the end.
Literally no one was calling for dr Seuss bans.
