fender in current time/year, regardless of political alliance, what's your take on 'cancel ___'?
I am aware some users here like to claim they are just mimicking from their opponent's playbook (Which even if it is true, is such a non-argument it's laughable). Why would you even condone 'regressive' behavior on the basis that 'the other side' is guilty of too/first?
you're already starting from a flawed assumption.
my honest take on it is that "cancel culture" doesn't really exist, at least not like the right is suggesting. a publisher deciding to withdraw books that contain blatantly racist stereotypes is not an attack on "free speech", it's capitalism at work. social media 'censorship' has consistently hit progressive and leftist outlets and users first and hardest, and i'm personally in favour of holding the companies accountable / break their monopolies, but that's hardly somthing 'small government' advocates on the right can argue without being massive hypocrites.
it's all just a big distraction, and it's noteworthy that most right wingers only clutch their pearls regarding "muh free speech" when it comes to racist / bigoted speech, while being totally fine with censoring stuff they don't like, illustrating how
it's not a principled stance concerning free speech, but an excuse to platform bigotry.
here's a list of the 10 most banned and challenged books in the US in 2019. maybe you notice something:
