i know for a fact that if merkel had rejected a judge based on the colour of their skin or their heritage, she would have been forced to resign immediately.
if ANY candidate for higher office engaged in blatantly racist and baseless speculations about the legitimacy / eligibility of another candidate, just based on their skin colour, insisting to see their birth certificate, they would certainly be pulled by their own party, and definitely not be elected.
i know that if neo-nazis had protested in favour of wehrmacht monuments and killed a counter-protester, a chancellor who claimed there were good people 'on both sides' would have been a goner the next day. same for someone who'd tell a far-right militia group to 'stand by'.
a head of state claiming that a movement for racial justice is a terrorist organisation, while denying the actual threat of right wing domestic terrorism (which is indeed a thing here in germany as well), is also something that is unthinkable to the vast majority of germans.
any attempt to suggest that racism and bigotry, white supremacy and nazis are a LARGER problem in today's germany than in the US, is clearly deluded and ignorant. again, that does not mean it's not a (growing) problem here, it clearly is - but luckily a majority of germans are smarter than american right wingers, and oppose such scum, rather than trying to downplay their prevalence and danger, making silly whataboutisms, deflections, and other excuses...
