the result of deregulation and low safety and reporting standards. when the fees and penalties for such incidents (the ones that even get discovered) are so low that companies don't improve their standards, you know that your country has been sold. yay 'capitalism'.

Bad argument. Making pipelines which go through thousands of miles of inaccessible wilderness completely tight and secure, as in 99.999% tight, would cost more than leaving them 99.5% tight and losing 0.5% of the oil to spilling. However, even small amounts of oil spillage can have devastating effects on the environment.

What do you propose?
