Neither is intellectual capital. By GPD (PPP), the Chinese have the largest economy on earth. They produce their own operating systems, technological and military equipment. But at least as of now, it's of far lower quality.
China produces more engineers per year than we have in entirety, many of them educated in the west by our top engineering universities. Sometimes we're able to hold that talent, most of the time that brain capital goes back to China. We may not like it and many in America would never want to admit it, but they've lapped us and we're less than a decade away from that becoming blatantly obvious across the globe. I'm kind of scared as an American when the day comes when the Chinese dump the dollar as the reserve currency. Many Americans will suffer greatly.
