that said, even if the old brakes did not directly cause the derailment (which is something no one ever claimed btw), the argument is that ecp brakes ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronically_controlled_pneumatic_brakes ) might have been able to prevent it, or at the very least would likely have mitigated the disaster by preventing the massive pile up that occurred.
and as a more general point, cutting safety regulations for flammable / toxic / dangerous cargo is just a bad idea, endangering the public in order to enrich some CEOs - but i guess you're fine with that...
