PARIS (Reuters) - France must develop a “society of vigilance” in its fight against the “Hydra” of Islamist militancy, President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday, as he paid homage to the victims of a deadly knife attack at the headquarters of the Paris police.

Oh wow. Macron is a genius. Hell, he's almost as smart as any ol' hillbilly in the US. :/

/e If he keeps practicing, he might one day be as smart as - as - Trump. :D

Regarding today's parliamentary elections in Poland:

Exit polls suggest there has been no surprise and the euroskeptic nationalist-conservative PiS has gained an absolute majority. The ultra-nationalist europhobic conservative Konfederacja seems to have entered parliament, but won't be necessary to form a PiS led government.

Meanwhile in Hungary:

The surprise seems to be here... as Orbán's party (the nationalist-conservative eurosceptic Fidesz) has lost in 4 of the 5 largest cities (including Budapest) in today's local elections. It seems like the party got good results in rural areas, but they've taken a serious blow in urban areas.

The Spanish Supreme Court has sentenced 9 of the 12 the Catalan separatists that were on trial for the 2017 separatist coup to 9-13 years of prison.

The court denied the accusation of rebellion as they decided the people that were being trialed couldn't be held directly accountable for the violence that happened in those days, but changed it to sedition, which is a similar (actively preventing the application of laws and order) but doesn't require there to be violence. 6 of these 9 accused, have also been declared guilty of embezzlement, due to their misuse of public funds (spent on an illegal referendum they were specifically told by the Constitutional Court to not hold or fund).

The other 3 people on trial have simply been sentenced a with 10 month fine, accused of disobedience.

With this out of the way, an extradition request of the separatists that fled to Belgium could follow, but it's unlikely that the judge will request it until the European Court decides on the immunity of former Catalan president Puigdemont, who was elected as a member of the European Parliament on May has yet to come to Spain to obtain his credentials to represent the country in Brussels and officially become a member of parliament.

So there's been a chain of protests in the Netherlands over the last few weeks.

The first being protests organized by Extinction Rebellion, which all fall under the umbrella of civil disobedience and were peaceful on all terms. Protesters were asked by police if they wanted to leave or be arrested and police was fairly gentle.

On the other side we have farmers protesting against a new set of regulations following a report that our soil is becoming increasingly toxic to the ecosystems in our country due to nitrogen emissions (NOx and ammonia). The high concentration and intensive farming practices make for bad localized air and soil quality. Now the government announced that farmers won't be able to emit as much of nitrogen related substances anymore, and the farmers got very very very mad.

They've already had one protest in The Hague where they shut down most of the country's highways by driving on em to The Hague with their tractors, and today it escalated. Farmers in all provinces went to the provincial governments and demanded the nitrogen-related regulation to be abandoned. 3-4 Provincial governments have already conceded. In Groningen, the farmers actually breached the doors of the provincial government building by driving a tractor into it. At the same time they're throwing eggs, tomatoes and straw at the reporters.

Meanwhile the police is doing jack shit. I gotta say, at first I was more or less with the farmers. I grew up near farms and know plenty of well-meaning farmers who treat their animals well. But they're starting to win me over to the other side with this shit.

I'm also incredibly disappointed in the spine of our local governments and the police. If it's a bunch of kids or elderly protesting they have no qualms in arresting people or grabbing the nightstick but some farmers and suddenly all they do is stand and shout. Fuck them too.

Is there actually public support in the rest of Spain (outside of Catalonia) for such draconian sentences? Would they really support jailing these people for a decade or more?

Typical case of cucked cops in Western Europe. Quick to intervene against soft targets where no escalation of violence is to be expected, but shy away from any sort "tough fight".

But yeah, there's no place in the world where fucking with angry farmers is a good idea.

The type of shit they were pulling:

Check out the cyclist at 0:05 nearly getting a barrier to the face. At the very least attempt at causing grievous bodily harm.

Well, typical VOX voters are upset about its softness and the fact they haven't been charged with rebellion. The party's leader Santiago Abascal described the sentence as a "terrible mistake" and "a disgrace tailored to fit the soft taste of president Sánchez" which "brings shame to Spain and the Supreme Court".

Keep in mind that they were sentenced pretty much to the least amount of jail time possible:

Quote

Sedition prisoners are those who, without being included in the crime of rebellion, raise publicly and tumultuarially to prevent, by force or illegal means, the application of the Laws or any authority, official corporation or public official, the legitimate exercise of their functions or the fulfillment of their agreements, or of administrative or judicial resolutions.
Article 544

1. Those who have induced, sustained or directed the sedition or appear in it as their principal authors, shall be punished with the prison sentence of eight to ten years, and with that of ten to fifteen years, if they were persons constituted in authority. In both cases, absolute disqualification will also be imposed for the same time.
2. Aside of these cases, the penalty of four to eight years in prison and the special disqualification for employment or public office for a period of four to eight years will be imposed.

Basically, sedition is 8-10 years for normal people who engage in sedition, or 10-15 years if those people hold a position of authority in public office. And you have to add embezzlement to that too...

So really, it's a pretty benevolent sentence. The judge decided to not take into consideration other aggravating factors like the fact that all of the accused had previously been warned of the consequences of their actions before they carried them out.

Personally, idc, I let the judges do their thing, and the sentence is in the bracket for sedition, so I guess it's fine. These people knew what they were getting into and still did it anyway, breaking laws and wasting public funds, they now face the consequences. If they thought that they were above the law because of some hippy delusion, that is their problem... nobody is above the law, and encouraging the opposite idea is dangerous.

wtf

Honestly, I hate these kind of protests/strikes. Everyone has the right to protest, but nobody should have right to cause chaos, ruin the business of people who aren't involved (by blocking roads and streets), or collapse cities.
