https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60383385Its now confirmed.
Even though the blockade is over, and all that remains is peaceful protests in the cities that don't disrupt international trade, Justin Trudeau has declared martial law under the emergency powers act, the first time it has been invoked since it replaced the war powers act.
The emergency powers act has been reserved for martial law scenarios, and was notably
not used in response to the covid-19 pandemic, with all premiers unanimously rejecting it when it was discussed.
Trudeau now has the power to:
- Prohibit travel to and from anywhere
- Evacuate or removal people to and from anywhere
- The seizure of any property
- Demand the forced, paid labor or services of anyone able to provide it
- Control the distribution of all materials
- Authorize any funding and payments
- Set up shelters and hospitals
- Fine anyone up to $5000 and/or imprison them up to 5 years without any trial or civil rights.
Justin Trudeau is now effectively at war against his own people, a formal declaration of weaponizing his executive powers to their fullest extent to forcefully suppress the peaceful protests of the Canadian population
This is also yet another textbook example for the perils of ever granting governments far-ranging "emergency" powers, no matter how good the reason might have looked when the law was passed. (In the case of Canada's law, it was about extremist Quebecois seperatists who were kidnapping and murdering people back in the 80s when this emergency powers act was passed.)
