Here are my main points in plain terms:

1) The summit is a good opportunity for diplomacy. Trump deserves credit for making it happen.

2) No specifics of denuclearization have been released, yet Trump is celebrating denuclearization via public statements.

3) Legitimizing North Korea and lavishing Kim with praise carries risk, and I hope we get something in return. We'll have to wait and see.

What risk are we running that we weren't previously?

North Korea is a nuclear power with enormous military installments within range of Seoul. The DPRK is a legitimate state, corrupt fiefdom that it is notwithstanding.

...

The nukes are a concern.

North Korea is a concern

What Trump tweets in essence to brag about "NK is no longer a concern" implying it's thanks to him is not a concern.

The market didn't see it as a concern, the media didn't see it as a concern, only you saw it as a concern. This is textbook TDS.

[bunch of people talking about real world implications of celebrating too early]

"hurr durr you didn't expect this?"

[yes it was expected, we're talking about the possible effects]

"wow you're dumb if you didn't expect him to celebrate, i did so i'm clearly smart and you just cry when he tweets"

imagine if NK opened up its country to foreign investment....that'd be insane.

if it's investment to mine natural resources that would be an interesting prospect.

i'm not sure what type of large scale investment otherwise you mean. there is a taboo aura around the country so opening it to tourists could bear fruit. I know there's a lot of world travelers that wouldn't pass up a safe trip to Pyongyang and the DMZ. it's like a trip to the berlin wall at this point.

Trumps talk about real estate investment seems just so out of left field though if it isn't in a small scale resort context. The internal wealth of the country won't support investments bearing fruit, it would be like trying to sell an apartment complex in Masai tribe territory.

Pompeo says North Korea sanctions to remain until complete denuclearization

SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) - Tough sanctions will remain on North Korea until its complete denuclearization, the U.S. secretary of state said on Thursday, apparently contradicting the North’s view that the process agreed at this week’s summit would be phased and reciprocal.

Just in case anyone was concerned that the US was taken in, or too easily gave ground.

Trips to NK are already possible. The only difference would be you could enter through SK.

And about the foreign investment, returns are going to be abysmal until decent infrastructure is up and running, esp for mining operations or other industrial applications.

ya the whole train in from china trip always seemed sketchy to me, but i'm also reading the perspective of authors who have to actively hide their purpose for being there. perhaps the tourist perspective is a lot lighter, unless u steal a poster or take a mocking picture of the great leader.

Tourist perspective is a lot lighter, friend of mine went there 2 years ago. And the train from China is not necessary, it's the cheapest option. You can also fly in from China.

i'm keeping a trip on my mind sometime in my life but i really want stuff to improve there. i'm not worried about getting tossed in prison I just have no desire to visit an active concentration camp. I'm sure where the guides bring you in Pyongyang is about the best conditions in the whole country, but from what i've read the poverty is inescapable these days.
