Yes, Skinned's claim is both an appeal to authority and an appeal to majority. It's a pretty strong appeal to majority, though. Not all logical fallacies are wrong conjectures, they just raise warning flags about the legitimacy of an argument. I think in this case, when the VAST majority of the academic community is in agreement, it is a relatively safe appeal to both majority and authority.

If this was "the vast majority of Americans think that unicorns are real", it wouldn't be as impactful, but since these are experts in a well-respected field (I know, a series of appeals to majority etc), it is reasonable to look at the "experts" and see what they say.
