Well you also have to take into account that they weren't living in Europe with all of its creature comforts. They were a small group in the middle ages establishing a fort in the middle of a wilderness with no reliable trade routes nor source of supplies and no guarantee they'd get help for 2-3 years. And plenty of attempted forts in the New World had failed with everyone dead or worse. Yeah, even if they were a little extra disciplined its a good thing just to help them survive those conditions.
That's some amazing spin, it's ultimately untrue.
Their explicit purpose for traveling to the new world was to leave what they saw as a godless society and set up a strict theocracy. That was their goal from the outset, before any practical considerations.
