Even conservative estimates put the herd immunity approach at 2 million dead, but that's a low number since it doesn't account for the deaths due to medical infrastructure being saturated.
Masks, contact tracing, and social distancing make lockdowns unnecessary if implemented properly (see Japan, South Korea).
In the United States it's been framed as herd immunity vs lockdowns because the current administration has totally botched the response. In reality if we had implemented social distancing early, implemented contact tracing, had mandatory mask orders, and several other things we probably could have avoided locking down in all but the most frequently traveled areas (NYC was always fucked, literally nothing could have been done there)
