They are very similar actually. Yes, the Scalia vacancy occured with more time until election day than RBG's, but on the other hand, Obama was a lame duck at that point while while Trump is not.

The situations are not identical, but I see no ground to argue that they're not comparable at all...

One of the reasons they are not comprable is the time frame. This nomination not being filled before the election would not be abnormal. It usually takes a while to fill a supreme court seat. However with scalia's replacement it was held for nearly a year, basically setting a modern record for a vacancy.

Dying in February is extraordinarily different than dying in September on an election year. Having a GOP Senate AND a GOP executive is also quite different. The balance of the court would have changed if Scalia's seat was filled by a liberal whereas the majority goes from 5-4 to 6-3.
