It's why Iran just helped themselves to an oil tanker and the EU was nowhere to be found. American ships in the region have military escort. EU ships? "You're gonna be very sorry if you don't give us back our ship! Hey... America... flex your muscles, come on, tell them to give us our ship back. Oh, and btw, you're a bunch of imperialist scum and suckers for having such a large defense budget!"

i'd love it. the cost (not just military) we have to pay DUE to american meddling in the middle east and other regions is significantly higher than fielding an army to defend europe against threats that'd exist without it.
whenever ignorant americunts start talking about how they are paying for our security, they completely ignore that fact. if anything, they should be reimbursing us for their warmongering all over the globe. if americunts are stupid enough to elect representatives that are puppets of the military industrial complex, so be it - it's their 'choice' to pay ridiculous amounts for 'defence' rather than having healthcare or livable wages, but the rest of the world should not have to suffer under american voters' ignorance, so please DO elect someone like that and quit NATO - just do your part in cleaning up the mess you caused and dealing with the suffering, destruction, and displacement that is a direct consequence of your actions...

That would actually be great, and something I'm sure many other Europeans would love. If our defense was based on self relience, we would have to get our shit together and advance as a united political entity. Nothing brings people together like an external threat. And while I understand it's a risk going in that direction, great successes come at the cost of taking high risks, and I'd be willing to take the gamble, as I have faith that the European people would pull through.

Nah, not really. Wait until the first war where a majority of the countries (say 60%) force a minority (say 40%) to send their sons into a war they and their national public disagree with. A joint European army would work well in times of peace, or when there's a war everyone agrees on.

But just imagine Russian troops invading eastern Ukraine - the French and Polish and many other Eastern Europeans would presumably be willing to send troops from the joint EU army. The Germans and Italians and Finnish would presumably be against it. Not the unlikeliest scenario among the realm of war scenarios, and would most likely split the EU states perfectly in half.


The entire NATO system only works because over 50% of its military power are supplied by just one country.
