Trump sours on almost everybody over time, because he creates a bunch of problems and they aren't able to solve them. And politically, he probably feels secure with the Christian right, but not with suburban women. So someone like Nikki Haley would be appealing.
Also worth noting that as Trump has gone along through his presidency, he's become less constrained. He's more willing to go with his gut and ignore his advisers. And while he demands loyalty, he doesn't return it. I'd still bet on Pence remaining on the ticket, but if Nikki wants to join Trump, there's a decent chance she will. And Pence would make the departure amicable because he's a spineless coward who wants to run for president when he gets the chance.
I get the logic, but realistically - Haley quite clearly wants to run for president herself at some point in the future (be it 2024 or 2028), and to me seems to deliberately keep some distance between herself and the Trump administration.
She jumped ship at a point in time where she can, 8 years from now, make a believable case along the lines of "
I tried to serve my country, most people thought I did a good job while I was there, but it soon became clear to me that I just could not support the direction/scandals/xenophobia/dilettantism of that administration".
If she decides to run as Trump's VP, she'd be forever "tarnished". If she becomes Trump's running mate now, her only chance at ever becoming president is if she sneaks into the WH kitchen and pours extra grease and salt on Trump's french fries...
I just dont see it happening. Also, she seems to have more of a spine than Pence, and would definitely fall out with Trump sooner rather than later. In terms of electoral strategy, Haley as VP would make a ton of sense. But in terms of the personal chemistry and of her own career ambitions, it's just not a good idea.
