Journalism isn't the word I would use for someone on prime time CNN.

TV Personality - maybe.

This guy, right here. Always looks like he's trying to pass a big turd or someone stole his ice cream cone.

That's a four-in-hand knot. It is supposed to be a bit crooked.

The one I think you are thinking of is the Windsor knot.

Tie is shit. Double/Full Windsor or get the fuck out.

Tie's should be perfectly symmetrical and never crooked. Only peasants chose to tie anything less than perfection.

These days, I don't really pay attention. But when I was young my father taught me to tie the Windsor and the four-in-hand. He explained that I HAD to know both. :)

/e I don't really remember WHY I had to know both, but he insisted that I did.

Your father was half correct.

As was mine, he taught me both as well. He actually preferred the four - in - hand, and would only do the correct knot for special occasions.

Here I just tie the damn things and get on with it. Didn't realize there was an entire fucking culture behind them.

How did we go from togas to suits anyway? Togas were much more comfortable. Now men squeeze themselves into monotonous clothing that restricts bodily movement. Not a good choice if you find yourself in an action scene.

Maybe that was the reason. Four-in-hand for every day things like work, and the Windsor for special occasions. He was pretty old school. I still remember him saying: "What are you wearing? You can't wear tennis shoes in downtown Pittsburgh."

And other things like: "You will speak the king's English, when you are at the dinner table."

/e My father was 100% Scotsman, my mother was 100% German.
