That's fine and I'll actually argue for your point.
Most of the media relies on a concept in marketing known as an avatar.
In the media planning process they sit down and think about the different types of people that might engage with their media.
These representations of people are known as avatars and they design the media around them.
Companies who create products do the same thing.
So you can't really fault the media companies for using a proven process to develop "better products."
The lower tier media outlets also do a strategy called "piggybacking," where instead of writing their own stories, they just have a writer basically say the opposite or something similar to a story that they can see through some kind of analytics is doing well.
That allows them to produce content on a topic that has already proven to do well and it costs them very little to actually produce the media, since no original reporting is needed.
Also, nothing is "hidden" on the internet and there exists software to crawl through everything that has ever been published online.
There are both enterprise level tools and tools for smaller publishers (such as BuzzSumo) that sort this all out and even estimate how popular a piece of content is on social media.
