Between life in prison or death, most people choose life. He had (and has) every opportunity to kill himself, and yet he's still breathing. The argument that life in prison is "worse" is at odds with how nearly everyone actually looks at it.
It's right to kill him, as right as it would be to put down a rabid dog. The question is whether we can ever be comfortable with being wrong, and whether we're willing to endure the considerable expenses we've put in place as a safeguard.
That's a very astute way of looking at it.
But it isn't "right to kill him" because the government shouldn't have the power.
