that's definitely a huge factor in your overall low life expectancy (even though many european countries, including germany, also suffer from increasingly unhealthy diets), but it doesn't really explain how US life expectancy declined so much more during covid - despite some pretty significant advantages (lower median age and population density, early procurement of the vaccine in sufficient quantities...)

Of course it does. Americans eat tremendously unhealthy diets and suffer terribly from obesity. Our relatively low smoking rates, while great for overall health, may have actually hurt the United States in this instance (https://harmreductionjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12954-020-00437-5,https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04583410), because nicotine seems like it may have a protective effect.

it's funny how basically all the terrible things that lead to american's abysmal health and life expectancy statistics are caused by the same systemic issue, namely the corporate monopoly regarding legislation.
lack of affordable healthcare, cheap (because highly subsidised) unhealthy diet options, high stress work environments, extreme politicisation of common sense public health measures like vaccinations... all of those would be significantly smaller issues in a healthy, multi-party democracy, in which politicians are actually somewhat accountable, and could realistically lose their mandates if they did a terrible job.

FDA spends their time making sure if it does kill you then at "least it kills them slowly" and they spend the other half of their time finding a new legal definition of the ingredients inside chocolate because companies keep finding out that feeding people rubber and plastic is cheaper than feeding them real food and they just wanna make money it isn't their responsibility to ensure that what they sell as a product doesnt kill people its their responsibility to make money. siiiiiiickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk love me some capitalism dude. sometimes dude. capitalism dude.

The UK and Australia with their first-past-the-post voting system (in which most MPs don't have to lose reelection to opponents) saw significantly lower polarization surrounding vaccines than countries with proportional representation like Germany, Italy or France, or the fellow Commonwealth country Canada.
